Personal Trainer Denver CO Mark Mueller discusses how to select a personal trainer with one of his clients.

Linda:
logo-034markmedballThe very first time I even heard about such a thing as personal training was when I joined a gym. I chose the package that included a month with a personal trainer. The guy was a space cadet, was never on time, even missed one session.

It was my first time in a gym and I really had no clue what to do with all those machines. So, I went from machine to machine looking at the pictures on how to do it, trying to figure it out on my own. Finally, I got frustrated and just quit going. I didn’t return to that gym for 3 years, even though I ended up paying for the full membership.

Mark:
The good news is that you did return and that is when and where I met you. It is unfortunate that you had this experience initially. When you and I talked about conducting these blog interviews, one of our goals was to help others from having negative experiences with personal trainers. So, thanks for sharing that and let’s take a look at step one in how to have a great experience.

Step One: A personal trainer can greatly improve your chances of making your fitness goals a reality. However, you obviously can’t reach a goal if you don’t have one. So, before you look for a trainer, you should have a good idea of what you want to accomplish.

Linda:
Well, that is easy. I want to lose 50 pounds by the end of July. I want to look like a runway model by fall. I want to be buff like you by the end of this year. So, let’s get started!

Mark:
Ok, we can accomplish the weight loss goal if you stop eating and start taking crack fulltime. However, this solution is obviously not a healthy one. Your goal may be attainable, but there is no way for someone of your body composition to lose 50 lbs in six weeks in a safe manner.

Part of your selection process should be to see if the trainer will help you to determine whether your goals are reasonable. Their overriding concern should not be getting hired by you, but meeting your needs even in this initial consultation. Without reasonable goals, you may become needlessly frustrated and discouraged.

Linda:
Ok, so step one is to set a reasonable goal to work with. Got it!

What is the next thing one should do before going out to find a trainer? Tune in tomorrow for step two – in the process!
